Listening was the first ever skill we learnt. It was not to us, we learnt it anyways. Listening comes naturally to us. And yet, it is not that easy. Infact, it is one of the most difficult skills to master.
The words that we use are usually not just information, they are often multiplexed perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and intentions. The job of the listener is not just to listen but to decode the message defying layers of their own biases, beliefs, feelings, and judgements.
It is said that in face-to-face communication, our words make up only about 11% of the message. Tone of voice is about 35% of the message and body language make up as high as 55%. In this scenario, there are a lot that can make listening even more challenging.
We found that 85% of things that we know today, we have learnt through listening.
